Half of all respondents confirmed that 25 percent or less of their current projects have a ‘significant commitment’ towards net-zero carbon, while only four percent said that most of, or all their projects have an embodied carbon assessment. Almost half (46 percent) of the work on retrofit projects that focus on energy efficiency involve the installation of insulation and windows.

At an operational level, respondents reported investing in offsite and other MMC to develop their offering in the market, while driving productivity and efficiency. Similarly, contractors are investing in a range of sustainability programmes and measures, including software packages to track emissions and improve their carbon footprint.
The industry points to barriers to using construction techniques with lower embodied carbon, such as timber framing and cross-laminated timber, including building regulations and fire and life safety perceptions.
